Here’s a story from the road…
We were looking for a place to tune up our live act before our big upcoming debut tour, and selected the Black River Barn (BRB) in New Jersey as a good spot. Apparently it’s a local-type bar with a decent weekday crowd that has been hospitable to new acts by hosting open mics on a weekly basis. We called to confirm the open mic earlier this week, and were told it was still running.
Unfortunately, whoever told us this was someone who worked there who was not in the loop at BRB. We got there and although we saw some other people unloading, we did not see a whole lot of bands filing in the doors to get on the open mic list. We were then told that BRB had moved from an open mic format every Wednesday to every OTHER Wednesday, with the alternate weeks being filled by live acts.
Well, being the good sports that we are (and having driven about an hour each to get there to begin with!), we decided to hang out, check out the show, get something to eat, and just chill out for a bit. We spoke with the booking guy there, and he said we were welcome for future shows (although we were not quite sure whether he meant future open mics or full length sets). So, we may get back to them on that soon.
The moral of the story is that although the night was musically disappointing, we took from it nothing but positive things: the possibility of future shows there, an evening hanging out as a band NOT being a band, and some good food and drinks. Just goes to show, that the best laid plans may not always go according to plan, but attitude means a lot and we have plenty of enthusiasm about our other upcoming gigs!
Stay tuned for more updates from the road and we look forward to seeing you at an upcoming show (big announcements coming soon!)!
Mahalo!
